Which purchases were covered?
Tuna in packages smaller than forty ounces produced by StarKist or Lion, bought while in one of the 32 qualifying states or territories between June 1, 2011 and July 1, 2015. Larger institutional packs were outside the class, as were purchases made in states not on the list.
Why was the class limited to certain states?
These were indirect purchaser claims, meaning the buyers were consumers rather than the wholesalers who bought from the producers. Only some states allow that kind of antitrust claim under their own law, which is why the class covered 32 jurisdictions rather than the whole country.
Was proof of purchase required?
No. Claims could be filed without receipts. Requiring documentation for canned tuna bought a decade earlier would have excluded almost the entire class, so the settlement accepted a self certified claim with a capped payment.
Can I still file a claim?
No. The deadline was December 31, 2024 and it has passed. This page remains as a record of what the settlement covered.
