Which watches were covered?

The first generation Apple Watch and the Series 1, Series 2 and Series 3 models. Later series were outside the class. Owning one of those models was not enough on its own: the class definition also required that a battery swelling issue had been reported.

Why did the report matter?

A reported issue is what created a record the administrator could match a claim against. Defining the class by reports rather than by ownership keeps it to owners who actually experienced the defect, which is also why the per person payment is modest relative to the price of the device.
