Background of the Broiler Chicken Class Action Settlement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In re: Broiler Chicken Antitrust Litigation alleges that major and regional chicken producers conspired to inflate raw chicken prices. Plaintiffs claim defendants including Tyson Foods, Pilgrim\u2019s Pride, George\u2019s, Peco, Fieldale, Mar\u2011Jac and smaller processors like Foster Farms exchanged sensitive pricing data and coordinated supply cuts to stabilize\u2014and raise\u2014chicken costs nationwide. These practices spanned more than a decade (January\u202f1,\u202f2009\u2013July\u202f31,\u202f2019) and, according to the lawsuit, forced consumers to overpay for everyday chicken products (drumsticks, breasts, wings and more).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An earlier settlement in 2022 resolved similar claims with a $181\u202fmillion fund. In April\u202f2025, seven additional producers contributed $22.5\u202fmillion to the case: Harrison Poultry ($2.9\u202fM), House of Raeford ($4.5\u202fM), Koch Foods ($5\u202fM), Mountaire ($3\u202fM), O.K. Foods ($3.2\u202fM), Sanderson Farms ($0.75\u202fM) and Simmons ($3\u202fM). With these new payments, the total settlement pool reached $203.5\u202fmillion. Although none of the defendants have admitted wrongdoing, they chose to settle rather than face further litigation costs, creating one of the largest antitrust recoveries for grocery consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
